MIT has recently developed a way to use solar cells on printable paper. Spring has arrived and with it, the need for fun and creativity. Here is an idea for a craft that you can make with your kids: the Tissue Paper Vase.

You need: a juice jar, paper mache paste (a 1:5 ration of flower to water, boiled for 3 minutes then left to cool) strips of white printable paper, and coloring items

Cover the jar in paper mache paste, and place three layers of paper over it. It takes about a day for the paper mache to dry, but after that you can decorate the bottle any way you want. Adding strips of heavyweight paper is a great idea, or you can color on the sides to match your flower.

For the flower, you need tissue paper or colored printable paper, straw, a cotton ball, scissors and some tape. Cut a 2” by 2” square of paper and place some cotton in the middle. Use a straw and wrap the paper with cotton around it. Put about 5 petals on around the straw and add maybe 3 or 4 layers of petals, or until the flower looks full and healthy.

There you have it, a beautiful flower vase, with a flower that won’t die. You can even spray some perfume on it, so it smells pretty.

I teach art class to elementary school children. I’ve been doing it for a long time now – almost twenty years. I do it because I love children, and I love art. Teaching children to foster their creative instincts is so rewarding, especially when I see the joy they get from working intensely on their projects, and the pride they have when they show the class their finished product.

I especially like the collage project I teach once a year. During this project, I tell the kids that they can bring in whatever they want, but it has to be able to stick to paper, at least with Elmer’s glue. Some of the kids get pretty crazy, wanting to bring in action figures and sticks and leaves they find at recess, but others are more sedate, and are satisfied with the choice of heavyweight paper I provide. A few years ago when I was into photography pretty heavily, I decided to start my own home business which would allow me to directly sell prints right from my house. The only problem with this was that I would need to buy everything including the printer and the paper. The printer itself was a Canon imagePROGRAF iPF6100 Large Format Printer. It was and still continues to be an amazing printer, but the paper I kept looking at in local stores near me and online was quite expensive.

You have to figure that this isn't just regular lightweight paper you can use for these prints. It has to be heavyweight, it has to be from a specialty store, it has to have custom paper size options and it also had to have different "material" options as well such as matte or glossy since different people wanted different finishes. When I was looking at stores that weren't specialty stores, the prices were SO high. It was incredibly frustrating because whole I was a good photographer, I really knew I wasn't going to make millions of dollars on my photography.

Recently I just bought this huge printer for my business - it seems to do everything, but make me breakfast! How to make paper with kids

The weekend is coming and we thought you might enjoy a nice arts and crafts blog. Because we love paper so much, how about learning together how to make paper with kids? Ye, we know we are a paper company but this blog post probably won’t make us go bankrupt. Let’s say it’s just for fun with the kids okay? Promise us that you won’t go and make your own office paper by hand…

You will need:

A kid…
Any kind of old junk paper (mail, newspapers)
Kitchen Blender
Bucket
Holed window screen or any plastic or metal screening
Towel
Cutting board
News paper and Cotton cloth

And Now… Making Paper!

Rip the paper into small pieces and soak them in a bucket with warm water. Soak it overnight or for a couple of hours, depending on your kids’ level of patience. You can also throw in the mix some natural decorations like leaves and
Pour the mix into a blender and fill it with water, to about half. Then blend the watery mix in order to get a smooth liquid.
Evenly spread the mix on the screen and place it on the towel.
Press the screen with the cutting board and squeeze out the liquids. Use a sponge to absorb any of the remaining liquids.
Spread a newspaper on the floor and put the cotton cloth above it. Turn the screen over the cloth and detach the paper.

That’s it! Now just let it dry and there you have it…
